#2 Marketing Dojo Newsletter: Good Writing is a Super Power.
Power words, market-language fit and books you cannot miss.
Welcome to letter number 2 from MarketingDojo. I am still trying to find the right rhythm to make this newsletter a part of my everyday practice. I hope I get there soon.
Let’s dive into this week’s newsletter dedicated to a skill I am obsessive about - the power of words.
Good writing is often an underrated skill. Irrespective of our role and industry, good writing always comes in handy. In today's newsletter, I want to share three great resources that can help elevate copywriting skills. (It’s six resources, but you will see what I mean).
The role of powerful writing is to persuade in print - this is true whether we are writing an ad copy, newsletter or a mail to a colleague.
Power words as a quick-fix
Power words are a dependable copywriting tool to grab a reader's attention. Unlike other copywriting tricks that can take months and years to master, sprinkling our writing with Power Words is the easiest trick to instantly improve the quality of writing.
This list of 801 power words by Smart blogger is my go-to reference for power words.
Finding Language/Market Fit: How to Make Customers Feel Like You’ve Read Their Minds.
Speaking your customer's language is the easiest way to persuade them to try, buy or take any other action. This article by Matt Learner served as a reminder to me to re-focus on customer speak.
One of my key takeaways from the article is the simple test of an engaging headline.
I am using this test for all my creatives going forward. Give it a shot.
Three must-reads:
Over the years, I have read hundreds of books and articles on copywriting. I am guilty of signing up for far too many courses on copywriting.Â
Here are my three must-read books that you should read (If you haven't read them already)
a. Make every word count by Gary Provost
This book taught me how to value words. Can we say more by writing lesser? It's full
of exercises that leave you a better communicator.
b. Everybody writes: Your go-to guide to creating ridiculously good content by Ann Handley
I am a fan of Ann Handley's writing style - conversational and humorous. This book combines fundamentals and advanced tips and tricks to better writing.Â
c. The Ultimate sales letter: Attract your customers. Boost your sales. By Dan S Kennedy
This book isn't strictly about copywriting - it combines writing with sales. Dan takes us thru how to draft that perfect sales letter. This book can help write better websites, emailers, newsletters and even the good old direct mailers—a must-read for all marketers.
That’s all from me today.
Practising is the most crucial ingredient to good writing. No articles or books can help if we don’t start. What are your favourite authors or resources on writing well?
I would love to know.
